RV Season Prep: What to Do Before Your First Spring Trip

Spring in Missouri means one thing for RV owners—it’s time to get your rig road-ready. The long winter is behind you, and the open road (or quiet campground) is calling. But before you hit the highway, there are a few key things to take care of—especially if your RV has been sitting in storage all season. At Liberty Bend Storage, we’re proud to be the go-to spot for outdoor RV parking in Liberty, MO. Our secure, gated facility is perfect for keeping your RV safe through the off-season—but it’s what you do next that gets your spring adventures off to a smooth start. Here’s your comprehensive checklist for de-winterizing, inspecting, cleaning, and packing your RV before your first big trip of the season.

1. Inspect the Exterior

Start with a full walkaround of your RV. Look for any damage from winter weather, fallen branches, or critters that may have taken shelter near your rig.
  • Check the roof and seams for cracks or leaks
  • Look under the chassis for signs of rust or damage
  • Inspect windows, doors, and vents to make sure seals are still tight
  • Test awnings and exterior lights
If you’ve stored your RV at Liberty Bend Storage, you’ve already avoided a lot of common weather damage thanks to our wide, open lot that’s easy to navigate—no tight turns or branches to worry about.

2. De-Winterize the Water System

Next up: getting your plumbing ready for use. If you winterized your RV properly, you’ll need to flush out any antifreeze and sanitize the water system.
  • Drain any remaining antifreeze from the fresh water tank
  • Flush the lines by filling the tank with water and running each faucet until clear
  • Sanitize with a diluted bleach solution (1/4 cup bleach per 15 gallons of water) and flush thoroughly
  • Check for leaks around connections, especially in the bathroom and kitchen
While you’re at it, fill your fresh water tank and double-check the water heater and pump. It’s better to find a leak in your driveway than at a remote campground.

3. Check Tires, Brakes, and Batteries

Sitting through the winter can cause tires to lose pressure or develop flat spots. Cold weather is also hard on batteries—so give these systems a careful inspection.
  • Inflate tires to the recommended PSI and check for cracks or bulges
  • Reinstall or reconnect batteries and test their charge
  • Inspect the brake system, including pads, rotors, and brake fluid levels
  • Grease wheel bearings if needed
If you store your RV at Liberty Bend Storage, remember to bring a portable air compressor or make a quick stop at a nearby gas station before you hit the road.

4. Test All Systems Inside and Out

Now it’s time to check that everything works—from your appliances to your safety alarms.
  • Plug in to shore power and test outlets
  • Check your generator, propane system, and power inverter
  • Run the fridge, microwave, A/C, and heater
  • Test smoke and CO detectors, replace batteries as needed
  • Make sure all lights and switches are functional
This is also a great time to clean the inside from top to bottom and restock your supplies. Wipe down surfaces, vacuum the floors, and open the windows to air it out.

5. Restock and Repack the Essentials

Once everything is cleaned and tested, it’s time to reload your RV for the season ahead.
  • Restock the kitchen with non-perishables, cookware, and cleaning supplies
  • Load up the bathroom with toiletries, towels, and paper products
  • Bring fresh bedding, blankets, and pillows
  • Don’t forget firewood, folding chairs, flashlights, bug spray, and sunscreen
If your RV was in storage all winter, double-check that no items inside were damaged or left behind. A quick check of closets, drawers, and exterior storage bays ensures you’re ready to roll.

6. Update Your Documents

Before you drive off, make sure everything on paper is ready, too.
  • Renew your vehicle registration and insurance
  • Review your RV road assistance coverage
  • Update your checklist or travel log for this year’s trips
  • Keep a copy of campground reservations, park passes, or route plans handy
Being organized on paper can save you from roadside headaches later.
